A framework for finding fish by separating structure, cover, current, food and seasonal comfort.
Structure is the shape of the water
Points, ledges, channels, drop-offs, humps and flats are structural features. They guide travel and provide depth changes.
Cover is the object
Vegetation, docks, laydowns, rocks and brush provide concealment, shade and ambush positions. Good locations often combine cover with structural change.
Current concentrates opportunity
In rivers, tidal water and moving reservoirs, seams and eddies let fish conserve energy near passing food. Fish often sit beside current rather than in its fastest center.
Temperature and oxygen move the target
Season, sunlight, wind, depth and dissolved oxygen change where fish are comfortable. Treat yesterday’s location as evidence, not a guarantee.
