Connecting Braid to Fluorocarbon: FG, Alberto and Double Uni

How to choose a braid-to-leader knot based on leader diameter, casting frequency and ease of tying.

FG knot

The FG knot creates a slim connection because the braid grips the leader instead of folding the leader back into a bulky knot. It is useful when the connection must pass repeatedly through guides, especially with heavier leaders. It requires careful tension and finishing.

Alberto knot

The Alberto is faster to learn and remains compact. It works well across many braid-to-fluorocarbon combinations when the wraps are laid neatly and the tag ends exit in the correct direction.

Double Uni

The Double Uni is easy to inspect and tie, making it useful for beginners or on-water repairs. It is bulkier than the other two and may click through smaller guides.

Strength depends on execution

Wet fluorocarbon before tightening, maintain even wraps, pull every section tight and test the finished connection firmly. Replace a leader connection that shows whitening, flattening, fraying or slippage.
